Got Ghosted? What to Text (and When to Just Close the App)

By the Ghosted team · · 5 min read

Got ghosted? Short answer: you can send one message, once, and then you're done. Keep it short, light and guilt-free, something like "Hey, haven't heard from you, so I'm guessing you're not feeling it. All good, take care!" That text leaves them an easy door to walk back through, and it gives you closure on your own terms. What you don't send: a second message, a paragraph, or a lonely "?" at 2am. Below: when to text, what to text (steal these), what never to text, and how to actually move on.

  • One follow-up, max. Short, light, no guilt trip.
  • No reply after that? That is the reply.
  • Unmatch, mute, and put the energy into someone who texts back.

First: are you actually ghosted?

Not every silence is a ghosting. People have exams, night shifts, dead batteries and their grandma's 90th birthday.

  • After a few messages in the app: 2 or 3 days of silence is normal. Dating apps are a waiting room, not a conversation.
  • After days of texting every day: 3 or 4 days of nothing, from someone who used to reply within the hour, is a signal.
  • After a date (or three): a week of silence, no reaction to your message, and a suspiciously active Instagram story? Yeah. That's a ghost. 👻

The tell isn't the silence itself. It's the change. Someone who went from fast, funny replies to nothing usually made a decision. They just forgot to mention it to you. (Want the psychology? We wrote a whole piece on why people ghost.)

Should you text someone who ghosted you?

Text if: you had a real connection (a date, a long chat that went somewhere), you genuinely want to know, and you can live with hearing nothing back.

Don't text if: you matched yesterday and traded three emojis, or you'd only be texting to make them feel bad. That's not closure. That's a subtweet with extra steps.

Follow the rule of one: you get one follow-up. Not one per day. One. If it lands, great. If it doesn't, you have your answer, and you got it without begging.

What to text after getting ghosted (steal these)

Pick the one that matches the vibe. Copy, tweak, send, then put your phone in another room.

The light check-in (early chat, nothing serious yet)

"Hey, you vanished on me! Still alive? 😄"

Zero pressure, easy to answer. Perfect when you've only been chatting for a bit.

The callback (you had a running joke)

"Ok I need to know: did you ever try that pineapple pizza place or did I lose you to it?"

Bringing back an inside joke reminds them why the chat was fun in the first place. Best open-door text there is.

The graceful exit (after a date or two)

"Hey, I haven't heard from you, so I'm guessing you're not feeling it. No worries at all, I had a good time. Take care!"

The MVP. Kind, mature, and it ends the story on your terms. Most people who receive this feel a tiny bit of shame and a lot of respect.

The direct ask (you'd been seeing each other for weeks)

"I noticed things went quiet. I'd rather know where we stand than guess. If you're done, that's okay, just tell me."

When you've been seeing someone for a while, you deserve one honest sentence. Asking for it is completely fair.

What NOT to text (please, we're begging)

  • The double, triple, quadruple text. Every extra message makes a reply less likely. Not science, just painful experience.
  • The essay. If it needs scrolling, it belongs in your Notes app, not in their inbox.
  • The guilt trip. "Wow, guess I wasn't even worth a reply." Even if it's true, it hands them an excuse to feel justified.
  • The fake-casual bait. "Lol saw a dog that reminded me of you" three weeks later. They know. You know.
  • Anything at 2am. Nothing good has ever been sent at 2am. Nothing.

The screenshot test: before you hit send, ask yourself if you'd be fine with this text ending up in their group chat. Yes? Send it. No? Delete it.

They replied! Now what?

Plot twist. Here's how to read it.

  • They apologize and suggest an actual plan: cool, give it a shot. People get overwhelmed. Just watch whether the effort is real this time.
  • "Sorry, been sooo busy!" and no plan: that's breadcrumbing (yes, there's a word for it, see our dating slang glossary). Reply nicely if you want, but stop chasing.
  • They say they're not interested: it stings, but honestly, it's a gift. Answer "Thanks for telling me, good luck!" and you both walk away with your dignity.

They come back, then disappear again? That's a pattern, not a misunderstanding, and one of the classic red flags. Unmatch with a clear conscience.

How to move on after being ghosted

Silence hurts because your brain hates unfinished stories. So finish it yourself.

  • Unmatch or mute. Checking when they were last active is a sport with no winners.
  • Don't rewrite history. It wasn't your third message or your Spotify Wrapped. Ghosting says more about their communication skills than about your worth.
  • Talk it out. Send the screenshots to your best friend. That's literally what best friends are for.
  • Get back out there, gently. One good chat with someone new beats a week of overthinking.

And if you're tired of profiles that look like a highlight reel, try somewhere more real. On Ghosted, photos go up as they are (no filters, no retouching, no AI), so the person you're texting actually looks like the person you'll meet. Yes, an app called Ghosted helping you get over ghosting. We see the irony too.

Want to be the person who never vanishes? Here's how to not ghost someone, with ready-made texts to say no kindly.

FAQ

How long should I wait before texting someone who ghosted me?

About 3 to 5 days after their last reply. Long enough to not look anxious, short enough that the conversation still feels alive.

Is it desperate to text after being ghosted?

One calm message isn't desperate, it's clear. Desperate is five messages. You're sending one.

Should I block someone who ghosted me?

You don't have to. Unmatching or muting is usually enough. Block if they come back to mess with your head, or if seeing them online keeps hurting. On Ghosted, blocking or reporting someone takes two taps.

Will they come back?

Sometimes, often weeks later with a "hey stranger" (that's called zombieing). Decide now how you'd feel about it, so future you doesn't have to.
